Lt Col D E BathgateCommanded 13th (HD) Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from June 1940 to August 1943.

Douglas Evelyn Bathgate, known to his friends as Joe, was horn on 30th October 1898 and was educated at Clifton College and the RMC Sandhurst.

He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in May 1917. After a few months with the 3rd Battalion he joined the 2nd Battalion in Italy and was invalided home in 1918. In 1919 he was posted to the 1st Battalion and served in Ireland and Aldershot.

In 1924 he was seconded to the Royal West African Frontier Force and served with the 1st Bn The Nigeria Regiment until 1929.

From 1929 to 1932 he served with the 2nd Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment in Dover and after a tour at the Depot rejoined the 1st Battalion at Quetta in 1935. He remained with that Battalion until early in 1940 when he returned to the UK and joined the 2/5th Battalion as 2 i/c. He served with that Battalion in France and after the evacuation he was appointed to command the 13th (HD) Battalion. In 1943 he was posted to Nigeria to command a PTC until the end of the 1939-45 War. He then commanded a POW Camp and retired from the Army on 27th August 1949.

From 1950 to 1957 as a retired officer he was employed as Administrative Officer at the Depot.

He died on 4th December 1957.
