Lt Col A C W Upton

Commanded 30^th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from August 1943 to May 1945.

Alan Cuthbert Waylan Upton was born in 1896 and educated at Haileybury College. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment (TF) in May 1915 and in 1916 attended the RMC Sandhurst. He was granted a Regular Commission in The Queen's Royal Regiment in 1917. He served in France with the Regiment and in 1919 joined the 3^rd Battalion and then was posted to the 1^st Battalion with which he served in Ireland and Aldershot. From 1925 to 1929 he was adjutant of the 5^th Battalion. After this he joined the 2^nd Battalion retiring a few months later. He was recalled in 1939 and served with the I T C.

In May 1940 he was appointed second-in-command of the 50^th Holding Battalion which later was re-named the 15^th Battalion. In August 1943 he was appointed to command the 30^th Battalion which he did until its disbandment in May 1945.

In September 1945 he commanded the parade at which the Freedom of the Borough of Guildford was presented to The Regiment. He was a keen cricketer and retired from the Army on 9^th September 1947.

He died on 20^th September 1958 at the age of 62.
