Brigadier R E Pickering CBE
Commanded 1/6th Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment from October 1940 to December 1941.
Ralph Emerson Pickering, known as 'Pick', was born on 13th September 1898 and educated at Uppingham School and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The Queen's Royal Regiment in May 1917 and served in France where he was wounded. In 1918 he joined the 10th Battalion.
After the 1914-18 War he accompanied the 2nd Battalion to India and took part in the Waziristan operations and was twice Mentioned in Despatches. In 1922 he was appointed ADC to the Governor of the United Provinces.
From 1928 to 1931 he was adjutant of the 22nd London Regiment (later re-named 6th (Bermondsey) Bn The Queen's Royal Regiment). From January 1934 to January 1937 he was adjutant of the 2nd Battalion. In January 1939 he was appointed to command The Depot and in November 1939 commanded the I T C at Guildford. From October 1940 he commanded the 1/6th Battalion until December 1941 when he was promoted to command Farnborough Sub-Area.
He then commanded Sub-Districts including Portsmouth Garrison between 1942 and 1945. In 1945 and 1946 he commanded British Troops in North Africa.
He retired from the Army on 18th November 1946.
He was made a CBE in the Birthday Honours in 1947.
He died on 27th March 1962.
