Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment & (The South Wales Borderers)

Commanded 2^nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from April to June 1945. Charles Francis Cox was born on 28^th April 1907 and educated at Wellington College and the RMC Sandhurst. He was commissioned in The South Wales Borderers on 30^th August 1926 and joined the 1^st Battalion with whom he served in the UK, Egypt, Palestine and China until 1932. From 1932 to August 1938 he was seconded to the Royal West African Frontier Force. From September 1938 to June 1939 he was a Staff Captain in Palestine and Trans-Jordan. He then joined 2^nd Bn The South Wales Borderers and served in Norway in 1940. Later in 1940 he rejoined the Royal West African Frontier Force, after being torpedoed in the Atlantic on his way to join, and served in Africa, India and Burma where he was wounded. He was made an OBE in February 1945. He commanded 2^nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from April to June 1945 and then commanded 1^st Bn The South Wales Borderers until 1948. After a Staff appointment he again commanded that Battalion from 1951 to 1953. From November 1953 to February 1954 he was Commandant of the All Arms Training Centre, BAOR. He then commanded 133^rd Infantry Brigade (TA) from February 1954 to 1957.

He retired from the Army on 28^th July 1958. He was Assistant Commissionerl-in-Chief of St John Ambulance, London (unpaid) from 1960 to 1966 and was awarded the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
