He was commissioned into the 1st Battalion of The Royal Irish Rangers in 1985
Following a Brigade Headquarters staff assignment he attended both the US Army Command and General Staff College and the US School of Advanced Military Studies.
Appointed to command the 2nd Battalion of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment in 2007, the battalion later became the UK Theatre Reserve for Afghanistan. He deployed to Helmand Province three times to command battle groups.
He was appointed Chief of Staff 3rd (United Kingdom) Division, attending the UK Higher Command and Staff Course in 2011 and was promoted to Major General later that same year.
He was appointed Colonelcy of The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment In February 2016,
In 2018 he was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Military Strategy and Operations).
