The Monument at Ostakakker dedicated to 1/6th Bn The Queen’s Royal Regiment In
September 1944, 7th Armoured Division, with 1/6th Queen’s in the vanguard closely followed
by 1/5th Queen’s entered the city of Ghent. To commemorate the liberation of the city, the
memorial was unveiled on 8th September 1962 in the Belgian National Shrine at Ostakker,
near Ghent. The Shrine is laid out on the exact spot where members of the Belgian
resistance were shot for their activities against the Nazi invaders. No higher honour could
be bestowed on a British Regiment than to have this memorial on such hallowed ground.
