Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment (The King's Own Royal Regiment)

C R M D O'C Fitz-SimonCommanded 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 15th May 1942 to 29th September 1942. Christopher Richard Manners Daniel O'Connell Fitz-Simon was born on 30th May 1898 and commissioned in The Leinster Regiment in December 1917. He served in France and was wounded and awarded the Military Cross in 1918.

In September 1922 he transferred to The King’s Own Royal Regiment. Between 1922 and 1938 he served with the 2nd Battalion in Burma, India and Sudan. He also served with the 1st Battalion and the Depot. Between 1938 and January 1941 he served with the 2nd Battalion in Palestine and the Western Desert.

After other duties he was appointed to command 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment in May 1942 but had to relinquish command in September owing to ill health. He retired from the Army on medical grounds in June 1943.
