The Second World War
in Europe & North Africa |
The Surrey regiments participated in most of the significant campaigns involving British troops in Europe and North Africa. Many units, regular and territorial battalions alike, participated in the desperate defence of France in 1940 and the subsequent retreat to Dunkirk. The fluctuating war in North Africa against Italians and German forces finally ended in victory following which allied forces landed in southern Italy in 1943 and fought their way up the peninsula, valley by valley, river crossing by river crosssing. In June 1944, northern France was invaded and after a year of slow and desperate fighting Germany surrendered in May 1945. Many men of the regiment who had been taken prisoner, some as early as 1940, recovered their freedom from German prisoner of war camps, often in chaotic circumstances.
