1663
  Irish Regiments in Tangier   English Regiments in Tangier
January Teviot arrives from Dunkirk and assumes command of the garrison.   Harley’s and Peterborough’s Regiments incorporate officers and men from Rutherford’s and Alsop’s Regiments (ex-Dunkirk). Peterborough’s Regiment becomes Teviot’s.
April Farrell’s and Fitzgerald’s regiments amalgamated as Fitzgerald’s Irish Regiment (five companies).   Harley’s and Teviot’s Regiments amalgamated as Teviot’s English Regiment (fifteen companies).

 

  Portugal    
January Morgan’s (1650), Daniel’s (1647) and Mann’s (1650) Protectorate Regiments in Scotland amalgamated into two new regiments (1st and 2nd English) under the Earl of Inchquin, and shipped to Portugal to support the War against Spain (Charles II marriage treaty).

  400 recruits shipped from Scotland.    
4th May Moorish ambush. Teviot killed, 400 casualties. Sir Tobias Bridge assumes command of the Garrison.
7th June Colonel John Fitzgerald returns from leave and is appointed Governor and commander of the garrison. Ordered to reduce and reorganise the garrison into two regiments, and abolish the distinction between English and Irish.
