It is based on the Regimental Call and the first phrase of 'The Soldiers of the Queen'
Slow March
'The Caledonian March' was the Regimental slow march of The Queen's Regiment. It was inherited from the Middlesex Regiment (OCO) and was previously the march of the 57th and was introduced by General John Campbell of Strachur who was Colonel of the 57th Foot from 1790-1806, having previously commanded them.
In 'The Gesto Collection of Highland Music' published in 1895 there appears a score headed 'The Coledonian March of The Die Hards - 57th Regiment'. A foot-note reads 'This march, believed to be of great antiquity, was a great favorite with Duncan MacDonald of Dalness, Colonel of the 57th Regt. or 'Die Hards', one of the heroes of the Peninsular War'. I believe Duncan MacDonald succeeded Inglis as CO of the 1/57th after Albuhera.
'Jubilee March' and 'On Richmond Hill Baht'at' , were both written by Mr J Wood a Bandmaster of the 3rd Battalion The Queen's.
The Loyal Toast
The Regiment adopted the old Sussex Regimental custom when toasting Her Majesty the Queen and Their Majesties, our Allied Colonels-in-Chief. The Allied Colonels-in-Chief were toasted separatley (the Monarch who has reigned the longest is toasted first), each toast being accompanied by the National Anthem. All these toasts are carried out whilst seated.
