Sergeant Major M. Lynch of the 3^rd Volunteer Battalion, The Royal West Surrey Regiment (The Queen's). Formerly a Regular soldier with the 1^st Queen's, he was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Medal for the Second China War, 1860 with bars Peking 1860 and Taku Forts 1860. A later photograph of him in an album in the museum shows him in civilian clothes, apparently retired, bearded and looking a picture of good health with a smoking pipe in hand.
