RSM "Buck" Adams had long service with the 2nd Battalion, but he will be remembered by many as the RSM of the 1st Battalion in the 1939-45 War. Imperturbable, cheerful and steadfast, RSM Adams set a fine example both in and out of action. In the early days of the North African campaign, the 1st Bn held a position at Tebourba some 18 miles from Tunis for a week, against overwhelming odds. RSM Adams was indefatigable in maintaining the morale and fostering the aggressive spirit of the defenders. For his courage and personal example he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
