Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Lt Col M G HicksCommanded 6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 1st January 1936 to July 1939 and the 1/6th Battalion from July to December 1939.

Maxwell George Hicks, known as 'Daddy' was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment in 1915 and joined the 1/6th Battalion with whom he served in India and Aden. After the 1914-18 War he joined the reconstituted 6th Battalion which he commanded from January 1936 to the doubling of the Territorial Army in 1939 when he took command of the 1/6th Battalion. In December 1939, owing to his age, he was posted to The Royal Pioneer Corps and served with that Corps in France in 1940.

He died on 28th June 1974 at the age of 92.

His son Captain J M Hicks was killed in action with the 1st Battalion in North Africa in 1943.
