Lt Col E H J Nicholls, DSO., MC.

Commanded the ITC at Kingston from December 1939 to August 1941.

Edward Hugh Jasper Nicholls was born on 17th July 1886 and was educated at Cheltenham College. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment via the Militia in May 1907. During the 1914-18 War he served first with the 7th Battalion in France of which he was successively adjutant and 2 i/c and was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. In August 1917 he was appointed to command 5th Bn The Royal Berkshire Regiment and was awarded the DSO for his fine leadership. He was Mentioned in Despatches four times for his services in the War. In 1919 he -joined 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment and served with them in North Russia, England and Ireland. In 1923 he was appointed an Instructor at the RMC Sandhurst. He commanded the Depot in 1927-28 and instituted the Regimental Cricket Week.

He retired from the Army on 25th June 1928. He was recalled in 1939 and commanded the ITC at. Kingston from December 1939 to August 1941 when it was amalgamated with The Buffs I T C to form No. 12 I T C at Canterbury. After various staff appointments he was posted as a Town Major on the Lines of Communication in Italy.
He died on 1st August 1959.
