Lt Col A P B Irwin, DSO

Commanded 6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 9th November 1925 to 31st December 1927.

Alfred Percy Bulteen Irwin was born on 30th September 1887. He was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment on 18th September 1909 and joined the 2nd Battalion in Burma in 1910. After returning to UK he was posted in September 1914 to the freshly raised 8th Battalion and after serving as adjutant, company commander and second-in-command he commanded the Battalion from June 1916 until its reduction to a cadre in May 1919 except for short periods when wounded or commanding the Brigade. In June 1919 he joined the 1st Battalion and sailed with it to North Russia where he was again wounded. In June 1920 he was appointed GSO 3, Dublin District. He retired from the Regular Army on 18th January 1921 and was granted the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. For his fine leadership of the 8th Battalion he was awarded the DSO in 1916, a bar in 1917 and a second bar in 1918. He was Mentioned in Despatches four times and wounded three times.

On 1st March 1925 he joined the 6th Battalion (TA) as second-in-command and commanded the Battalion from 9th November 1925 to 31st December 1927.

He died on 30th April 1976 at the age of 88.
