He
was the third son of Robert, 4th Earl of Lothian and 3rd Earl of
Ancram, and his commission as Colonel of the Regiment was signed
by King William III, retroactively, on 8th September 1716. Nothing
is known of his earlier military service, but it is not unlikely
that he was involved in the suppression of the Scottish clans (1689-1692)
and the conquest of Ireland (1689-1690). He may later have served
in the continental campaigns fought during the reign of Queen Anne,
but no details have been traced. He died on 1st August 1728 while
still in command. |
