Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Lt Col J S FitzGeraldCommanded 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 13th October 1924 to 7th April 1927 when he was murdered.

James Stephens FitzGerald was born on 30th August 1878. He was commissioned in The Royal Irish Regiment on 17th February 1900. He was adjutant of the Battalion from April 1906 to September 1909. He attended Staff College and in 1914 served in France with his Battalion but was wounded and taken prisoner and remained a captive until the Armistice in 1918. He then was appointed a DAAG at the War Office and in April 1922 was attached to 2nd Bn The East Surrey Regiment. On 12th August 1922 he was transferred to The East Surrey Regiment and posted to the 2nd Battalion. In December 1922 he was appointed DAA&QMG Southern Area, Southern Command, Portsmouth. On 13th October 1924 he was appointed to command the 2nd Battalion and served with it in Jersey and Gibraltar until his murder on 7th April 1927.
