Ian Raymond Lovell, known as 'Chuckles' was born on 27th April 1898 and, commissioned in The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment in October 1916.

He served in France and Belgium in 1917 and in 1919 on the North West Frontier of India. In May 1919 he was appointed a staff captain (RTO) India. From August 1924 to February 1928 he was adjutant of The Penang Volunteers.

In August 1941 he was appointed to command 1st Bn The East Surrey Regiment.

In May 1942 he left for another appointment. He retired from the Army on the 1st April 1947.
