Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment
Commanded 2/6th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from July 1939 to May 1940.
Howard Searles Burgess was commissioned in The East Surrey Regiment and posted to the 1/6th Battalion with whom he served in India and Aden during the 1914-18 War. In 1919 he transferred to the Indian Army and served with The Gurkha Regiment and also The Burma Rifles.
On his return to the UK in the early twenties he joined the reconstituted 6th Battalion and was Richmond Detachment Commander until 1939 when the Territorial Army was doubled and he was appointed to command the 2/6th Battalion.
He took the Battalion to France in April 1940 and subsequently was posted to the Royal Air Force Regiment in which he held various commands.
