Commanding Officer - The East Surrey Regiment

Commanded 5th Bn The East Surrey Regiment from 9th April 1930 to 8th April 1934.

W H Hatchard-Smith prior to the 1914-18 War served in The Artists' Rifles and Inns of Court OTC. He was commissioned in 5th Bn The East Surrey Regiment on 30th August 1914 and served with the 1/5th Battalion in India and Mesopotamia. In 1917 he was appointed Staff Captain 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st (Peshawar) Division and afterwards was DAQMG of 4th (Quetta) Division. In 1918 he was adjutant of the 1/5th Battalion. In August 1920 he rejoined the reconstituted 5th Battalion.

In April 1924 he was promoted major and was appointed to command the Battalion on 9th April 1930. On completion of his tour of command on 8th April 1934 he was promoted Brevet Colonel and transferred to TARO.
