The Regimental Association
When The Queen’s Royal Regiment and The East Surrey Regiment amalgamated to form The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment on 14th October 1959, the Old Comrades’ Associations of The Queen’s Royal Regiment and The East Surrey Regiment merged to become the Regimental Association of The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment. The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment Association remained as a separate entity after 31st December 1966 when the Regiment joined with three other regiments in the Home Counties Brigade to form The Queen’s Regiment.
Anyone who has served in The Queen’s Royal Regiment, The East Surrey Regiment or The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment (regular or territorial) is eligible for membership of the Association.
The Association organises a number of functions each year. Amongst these are: the Annual Reunion, usually held at the Union Jack Club, London in November; and the Annual Church Service, usually held at Guildford Cathedral in June.
The Association Newsletter
On the formation of The Queen’s Regiment, the Association discontinued the Regimental Journal of The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment. From May 1967 an Association Newsletter has been published twice a year (May and November). The Newsletter contains information on Association and other functions, news of individuals, reminiscences of readers and articles of Regimental interest. It is strongly recommended that all members of the Regimental Association subscribe to the Newsletter (currently £2 per annum). In recent years various Supplements have been written, covering a wide range of regimental life, and items of historical interest which needed to be recorded for the future.
The Officers’ Club
It was agreed at the time of the amalgamation in 1959 that there would be one officers' club. The title of the club would be:- The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment Officers’ Club. Membership was (and remains) open to all who have held a commission in the Queen’s, the Surreys and the Queen’s Surreys: this includes National Service officers. Officers who were attached to these regiments may be invited to join by the Managing Committee. Functions are now restricted to an annual Ladies' Luncheon, normally held in October at Clandon Park. Membership of the Officers’ Club (currently £6.50p per annum) automatically brings membership of the Regimental Association and subscription to the Newsletter.

The Regimental Charity
The Regimental Charity is an amalgamation of several former Charities, now regulated by a single Sealed Scheme of the Charity Commissioners. The Association President is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
The defined purposes of the Charity are:
(1) in relieving either generally or individually persons who have served in the Former Regiments or are past or present members of the Regiment and the dependants of such persons, who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress in such ways as the Managing Trustees think fit;
(2) in assisting such persons who have served or who are serving as aforesaid to seek and obtain employment;
(3) in making donations to charitable organisations, hospitals, homes or institutions which include in their objects the assistance of such persons as aforesaid;
(4) in assisting such persons and their dependants to obtain holidays;
(5) in promoting the efficiency of the Regiment and maintaining its traditions and esprit de corps;
(6) in or towards providing recreational facilities and equipment for persons serving in the Regiment.
(In the context of the above purposes of the Regimental Charity, “The Regiment” means The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (Queen’s and Royal Hampshires). “The Former Regiments” means The Queen’s Regiment, The Queen’s Royal Regiment (West Surrey) (formerly the 2nd Foot), the Corps of The East Surrey Regiment (formerly the 31st and the 70th Foot), the Successor Units of those Corps namely The Queen’s Royal Surrey Regiment and all Regular, Territorial Service, Training and other (Infantry) Battalions, Depots, Units and Sub-Unit of those Corps and Regiments whether badged or not or bearing the title of any of them.).
Benevolence
Individuals seeking benevolence assistance from the Regimental Charity should in the first instance contact their local SSAFA Forces Help or Royal British Legion representative. Where appropriate that organisation would then submit a report through the Benevolence Secretary Regimental Headquarters The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment (Telephone: +44 (0) 1227 8180 56) for consideration by the Regimental Charity’s Benevolence Committee. Membership of the Regimental Association is not a factor considered, however where individuals served with only The Queen’s Regiment and/or The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment, applications would first be considered by the charities of those Regiments. |
There are additionally separate Territorial Army Charities. The Chairman of those Territorial Trustees is Lieutenant Colonel F B Herd TD JP DL.
The Golf Society
The East Surrey Regiment, more than The Queen’s Royal Regiment, had always been a keen golfing regiment, and had a thriving Golf Society at the time of the amalgamation. After amalgamation they welcomed all members of The Queen’s Royal Regiment to become members of the new Golf Society. There are now normally two meetings a year, the Spring and Autumn meetings.
The Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants' Association
The East Surreys had an Association dating from 1951, whereas the Queen’s did not have an equivalent club or association. The Surrey members extended an invitation for members of the Queen’s to join and this was accepted, and the Association continues with minor changes to its original constitution.
Affiliated Branches
The Association has a number of affiliated Branches, primarily representing specific former elements of the Regiment or geographic regions. These Branches, while receiving some financial support from the Regimental Charity, are independent organisations with their own separate membership rolls and constitutions. A number of these Branches organise their own events. Further details about the Branches and their respective secretaries can be obtained from the Regimental Association Secretary. |
